Sounder 1.2.1
=============
____________________________________________________________________
NOTE - I am re-releasing SOUNDR12 as SOUND121 only because
of the inclusion of the registration file BMTMICRO.TXT. There
is no change in the .exe. BMT Micro provides worldwide registration
services for many shareware applications.
_____________________________________________________________________
What's new
----------
1.0 7/31/95
first release
1.2 10/21/95
This version contains mostly bug fixes and the implementation
of some additional effects. There is no new funtionality.
Introduction
------------
Sounder is a digital music player for OS/2 PM and MMPM/2. More
specically, it is designed to play MOD, MTM, and S3M music files.
Sounder is shareware. That is, it may be freely distributed but
I retain the copyright. In addition, satisfied users are encouraged
to become registered users (details later).
Disclaimer
----------
This program should work as intended and I can assume no
responsibility should damage occur due to a program malfuntion.
General
-------
This program should be simple enough to operate that nothing much
need be said. If you have any questions at all or any suggestions,
please contact me on CIS or the Internet. I already have some
suggestions and will be looking at these in the near future.
The first question you are likely to have is: "what goes in the
graphics window?" I actually do have some graphical, per channel,
volume level indicaters working. However, they require some DLLs
in the MMOS2 directory that IBM has not yet released. I expect to
see them out fairly soon.
What about the XM music files? I finally located the XM file spec
and will be looking at these as soon as Sounder release 1.2 is out.
Sounder is a cousin of PMPoze (my MOD composer for OS/2). I may
merge these two programs in the future, so for now, if you register
one, you register both. If you registered PMPoze, you are already
registered for Sounder.
Music Files
-----------
A generic mod file is a song file containing recorded instruments
(samples) and notes. They are self-contained and only a sound card
is needed to play them. The brand MOD was the original digital music
file and originated on the Amiga. Today, MODs come in 4, 6, and 8
track (voice (channel)) versions. The number of voices is simply
the number of instruments that can be played at once. There have been
many spin offs from these early mods, and the two supported by Sounder
are MTMs and S3Ms. MTM is basically a MOD with up to 32 channels,
although most have 16 or fewer. S3Ms also have 16 (or fewer) channels
but have more information in a note. Generally speaking, MTMs sound
better than MODs and S3Ms sound better than MTMs. A good S3M will
have almost "CD quality" when played all out at 44.1khz and 16-bits.
By the way, my 486/33 is not quite fast enough to sustain 44.1khz
on 16 channels.
The Internet is by far the best source for MODs, MTMs, S3Ms, and many
others. Check:
ftp.cdrom.com/pub/demos/music/...
Also check the news group:
alt.binaries.sounds.mods
Quite a few mods are posted almost daily. The newsgroup is also good
for discovering other sites, including WWW sites. Also, most good
BBSs have MODs and there are a few on Compuserve (GO SSFORUM).
Registration
------------
Please support my habit of eating. Send $25 to:
Tom Stokes
27836 Finisterra
Mission Viejo, CA 92692
or register via CIS (push "About")
Remember, $25 gets you both Sounder and PMPoze.
